On October 12, 2010, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement responding to the delivery of a Human Rights Campaign petition concerning the church’s position on Gay and Lesbian marriage. In its statement, the church was addressing not only the HRC but the world as a whole. It was a letter of outreach and love to those who feel as if the LDS church is attacking them and their values. The audience for this statement is particularly frail at this time due to the recent deaths of homosexuals who committed suicide because of anti-Gay or anti-Lesbian harassment. Knowing that many are offended and some are openly hostile towards the church, the statement is very careful to be sensitive to the audience’s feelings. There is, however, an implied meaning that the audience as a whole is misinformed concerning the LDS faith’s position and feelings towards the homosexual community. It is implied that although the church doesn’t agree with their beliefs, they still respect and love them as Christ himself would.

Interesting that they take a strong standpoint, but in a caring and sensitive way. This is an example we can all follow.
ReplyDeleteI liked the point about being careful to not offend the audiences feelings by choice of words. Good Job
ReplyDeleteGood job bringing up both sides' purposes in making an argument-especially the fact about the suicides.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you brought in outside information and current events to help support your point.
ReplyDeleteGood perspective on how the article isn't just addressing the HRC but rather that whole world.
